Cockett's Butchers & Bakers
Harry pulled his coat in tight and dashed across the cobbles into Cockett’s. On his right sat the butcher’s counter, so Harry turned to the left to find the bakery staring back.
Herriot's
Harry found himself staring at a corner building with the word HERRIOT’s in gold lettering on the side of it. After what he’d seen of All Creatures Great and Small, he wasn’t so sure he wanted to go in, fully expecting it to be dated and undoubtedly themed on the television series.
Hawes Auction Mart
‘The auction mart was abuzz with action, with people milling around and animals being loaded or moved from pens.’ (I thought this would be funny because the place is completely deserted in the photo)
Hawes Marketplace
‘And the marketplace in which he was now stood was all abuzz with people carrying shopping, jumping over puddles, dodging Land Rovers and other 4x4s and one or two particularly massive tractors.’
Semerwater
‘It was a dark and bleak place. The lake itself, Semerwater, stretched out before them, a still thing of silent blackness, like an enormous hole waiting to swallow them. Around them, Harry could make out the watching silhouettes of the surrounding hills.’
Roman Road
‘Just going over the old Roman road,’ Jim said, not slowing the Land Rover down, so Harry didn’t really get a good look. ‘Runs straight as you want, from Bainbridge on our left, right up onto Dodd Fell to our right. Nice little walk if you ever fancy it. Kids from the primary school do it each year as a sponsored walk.’
Hawes Ropemakers
‘What’s that then?’ Harry asked. ‘What it says,’ Dave replied. ‘Ropemakers. They make ropes. Clue’s in the title. Been there for years. As a kid, that roof used to have the best icicles on it! You could snap them off and pretend they were light sabres! Didn’t last long, but it was fun, like.’
Community Centre, Hawes
‘It’s not the police station, no,’ Dave said, confirming what Harry had been thinking. ‘That closed twenty years ago. Community runs this place now and the police are a part of it. Library, post office, even the petrol station up the other end of town, just beyond the primary school.’
Lane up to the Community Centre
‘The community centre was sat at the far end of a courtyard. […] Harry wasn’t quite sure what he’d been expecting, but a library and customer service centre were probably so far removed from anything he could have guessed that he just sighed, shrugged, and walked in through the door, which was situated at the left-hand corner of the building.’
