FREE SHORT STORIES

Bonus content for VIP fans of DCI Harry Grimm. Thrilling mysteries set in the spectacular landscape of the Yorkshire Dales.

These short stories are available to download for free. They’re available at the back of the DCI Grimm books and I have also sent them out to subscribers in my newsletter. If you missed any of them, then you can find them all here!

Spoiler Warning: Be sure to read the descriptions, though, because some of them should only be read after you’ve reached a certain point in the series (no one wants to stumble across a spoiler by accident).

HOMECOMING

You’ve probably read this one already. It’s the classic tale of how a young Corporal Harry Grimm came to leave the Paratroopers and join the police force. Put simply, it’s Harry’s origin story (to borrow a term from the Marvel Universe). So you can read this at any point in the series to find out how it all began….

DATE NIGHT

This light-hearted tale comes at the back Unquiet Bones and should best read after that to avoid any spoilers. It takes place on a cold and snowy Christmas Eve in Hawes, with the village preparing for the annual Christingle service. Although it’s far removed from the grisly goings-on of Unquiet Bones, there’s still drama aplenty courtesy of Dave Calvert’s goats. There’s even a guest appearance from Hawes’ very own star butcher, Dave Cockett.

WHEN HARRY MET JIM

A short story that takes you back to Harry’s first day in the Dales. Find out how the newly arrived DCI and PCSO Jim Metcalfe tackle their most formidable foe yet – a Swaledale tup

A GRIMM CHRISTMAS

A Grimm Christmas is set just a few weeks after Unquiet Bones. Because of this, the characters lives are, for obvious reasons, further on than in the earlier books. So, if you don’t want to know, for example, whether or not Harry eventually likes cheese and cake (or not!), then don’t read this until you’ve finished book 12!

NEW BOOTS

Now that he’s in Wensleydale, Harry begrudginly accepts that he needs to buy himself some sensible footware. And Harry’s not a fan of shopping …

A GHOST AT THE CASTLE (Halloween Special)

It’s Halloween in the Dales and strange things are afoot at Middleham Castle. Can PC Jenny Blades figure out what’s behind a ghostly apparition terrifying the locals?

WHEN JADYN MET TANK

After an already busy evening, Police Constable Jadyn Okri heads over to Swaledale to help find a missing farmer. It’s very loosely based on an old newspaper report from around 100 years ago about a farmer who disappeared while out shooting rabbits. In this modern-day retelling, Constable Okri and DS Dinsdale are the ones who come to the rescue.

CHAINSAW Vs MOTORBIKE

This is a scene I cut from Silent Ruin, as I felt it didn’t add to the story or move the action along. However, I thought it was too good a tale to leave on the cutting room floor, so I turned it into a free short story.

COCKETT'S ROCKETS

This was originally going to be the first chapter of Dark Harvest but I ended up taking it out as I didn’t feel it was a dramatic enough start to the story. I still think it’s a fun chapter, though, so thought it best to offer it as a freebie to you lovely newsletter subscribers. It doesn’t contain any spoilers, but it’s probably best appreciated after you’ve read Dark Harvest. Enjoy!

DUELLING UKES

DUST TO DUST

This was originally planned as a chapter for book 18, Ashes of Betrayal. But I found it so emotional to write that it dominated the story, and it became hard to focus on the unfolding murder plot. So, I lifted the chapter from the book and created Dust to Dust, which I think fully deserves to stand alone.

If you haven’t read See No Evil (book 17) or Ashes of Betrayal (book 18) yet, then don’t read Dust to Dust: it contains a huge spoiler!

New Beginnings

I wrote New Beginnings as an exclusive for the annual Harry Grimm Event, held in Hawes in 2024. Aubrey Parsons, our wonderful Grimm series narrator, read the story for the first time, live, in front of 70 Grimm fans in the back room of The Fountain Hotel. It’s slightly longer than my usual short stories and is a humorous episode that sits alongside book 19, Blood Fountain. I hope you have fun with it – I know I did!
